Our next presentation will be on Monday 2nd March, where we will be hearing about the archaeological excavations that were done prior to the construction of the Halfpenny Meadows estate, at the top of Pendle Road. The major find during this work was a Bronze Age cremation cemetery, surrounded by a circular ditched earthwork. Burnt human remains were placed in beautifully decorated ceramic urns in the centre of the earthwork.
The senior archaeologist in charge of the excavations was Ben Dyson, who now works for Greater Manchester Archaeological Advisory Service. Ben will be speaking to us about the findings and their significance. I have attached the poster, and below is a graphic showing exactly where there burials were - underneath 19 and 21 Legion Close.
Beginning in October 2025 and running through to 11th May 2026
